This book is the product of many years of
study and teaching in the general areas of Ancient History
and Classical Studies. Alexander is a figure of fascination
for teacher and students alike; his life and campaigns
raise many questions which are open to a variety of answers.
The book tells the story of Alexander in an interesting
and gripping fashion. He comes to life as a person. The
ancient sources which have survived are explained. There
is a fair assessment of Alexander's achievements and his
weaknesses. Understanding the geography is essential for
understanding the campaigns and the problems that Alexander
and his army faced. The book provides 8 maps - one in
colour - and there are many illustrations. The whole book
is well planned, attractively produced, readable and informative.
It has the great virtue that it covers the ground without
undue length or technical language.
Raewyn Gilmour has some 30 years experience as a teacher
in the NZ Secondary School system. She has travelled
widely and lived in the Middle East for a period. She
knows the context of the ancient world at first hand.
The book contains many pointers for student research;
it is suitable for use with internal assessment or external
examination.
The title 'Warrior King to Great King' reflects the
transition from the Macedonian Kingdom to the Persian
Empire. Alexander is brought up and trained under the
leadership of his father Philip II in the warrior kingdom
of Macedonia; he inherits Philip's ambitions for expansion
after his untimely death; but under Alexander the scope
of the plans is greatly expanded and Alexander ultimately
becomes Great King - the title given to the Persian
monarch.
This book is planned as a standard text for those beginning
Alexander studies.
