Seventy-Five Years on Two Wheels

A History of the Auckland Motor Cycle Club Inc 1926 - 2001

by Calum Gilmour

AMCC was first incorporated in 1926 under the name of the Sports Motor Cycle Club Inc; this was changed to Auckland Motor Cycle Club Inc in 1931. From the beginning the Club has promoted competitive motor cycle sport - road racing, trialling, off road competition of many sorts. Alongside this spirit of competition there has been a consistent concern for road safety and rider training, and for the development of the skills needed to ride well and safely. The Club has also been the guardian of technical excellence in the maintenance and development of motor cycles. The people who ride motor cycles are often strongly individual characters, and the story of the Club as told here is very much the story of the members over the years. Here you will find entertainment, amusement, tragedy, achievement. The story of the Club reflects the changes that have occurred within NZ society, and this is a focus of the history. The Club has formed an important part of the lives of its members. Sometimes it has gone well; sometimes it has been near collapse. It is interesting to look back at the history and to learn from it as well as being entertained by it. The author is a life member and was Club Secretary from 1981-1989. He writes as one who is part of the history, and to whom the Club means a great deal.

Calum Gilmour is a life member of the Auckland Motor Cycle Club Inc who has written a history of the first 75 years of the Club's life. The story has been thoroughly researched and it is presented here in a readable and interesting form. The focus is on the activities of the Club over the years and the changing circumstances and social context of the Club. Above all it is the story of the people who have made up the Club from 1926 to 2001. Motorcyclists are often strongly individual characters; their story is entertaining, often amusing, and always informative.

The Club has been associated with the Pukekohe circuit from its inception in 1963. It promotes road racing there. In addition it has its own Riding School and has a history of involvement in and concern for rider training. The Club has a strong social life both on and off the road.

The Club Rooms are at 6 Findlay St, Ellerslie. The Club has some 400 members. Its history is closely tied in with the history of the Auckland area.
