A
POSTCARD FROM TE AROHA
An account of taking the waters in Te Aroha's Hot Springs
Domain
By Kevin Wells
Kevin Wells was brought up on a farm near Te Aroha
in the North Island of New Zealand. He taught at the local
College for a number of years. He knows the area and its history
very well. Moreover he has a lucid and readable style. This
is a lovely book with a fascinating text and some 170 photographs
to illustrate it.
The Te Aroha Domain was developed in the early days of European
settlement in the North Island of New Zealand from the 1860's
on. There are many springs which were sought out for their
medicinal qualities. The Domain reached its zenith in the
Edwardian period of the early 1900's. Later the Domain declined
in popularity and the installations also deteriorated. Then
in the 1990's there was a redevelopment of the Domain and
its facilities. Today it is a good place to visit for its
history as well as its recreational opportunities.
This book is of great interest as a contribution to New Zealand
history. It is well produced with illustrations in both black
and white and in full colour. It is an attractive gift and
a worth while addition to one's library.
