The City of Athena is a broad introduction to the history of Athens and her empire in the 6th and 5th centuries BC.  The book is designed for Year 12 and 13 students in New Zealand schools and colleges.  It is suitable for all the units of study associated with Athens and any of the methods used to assess the students such as NCEA or Cambridge examinations.  The language is straight forward; technical terms are explained; the text is fully illustrated in both greyscale and colour.  There are good maps which will help the student and teacher to locate principal sites and trace the context of historical events.

Athens did not exist in a vacuum.  The book places events, political developments, social life and artistic, literary and philosophical advances in their wider context within the Greek world.  Early chapters summarise the history from the period of colonisation through the beginnings of political change with Solon and the Tyrants before the book embarks on the detail of the 5th century.  Students will find that this book provides them with a sound background for subsequent studies at tertiary level.

The author is an experienced teacher of Classical Studies in New Zealand schools.

The book is designed as a resource for New Zealand secondary schools in Years 12 and 13. The units covered are as follows:

Year 12:
The development of democracy at Athens in 6C & 5C BC
